Application

Describe an instructional activity (e.g. part of a lesson plan) where you can incorporate this technology.  Consider an activity that can be conducted in 5 – 10 minutes.

·         Learners:  The learners will be for 4th grade English.    

·         Learning Outcomes:  At the end of this activity students will gain a much better understanding and knowledge of contractions.  They will be able to distinguish and match the words to their contractions at sight.   

·         Assessment:  Students will be informally assessed by matching the correct combination of words to their correct contraction while playing Piñata Party:  Contraction Action.  We will all play together as a class on the smartboard.  This will help me check for understanding of each child’s knowledge over contractions.    

Second, break down your activity into a timeline of planned events and procedures.  Here you should describe what students and the teacher will be doing chronologically during the activity.  Below is one of the good examples from previous reflections:

·         As the teacher I will introduce contractions by having the students watch a short video on YouTube called “Crackin’ Contraction Rap”.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar58NnHb1rk

·          After the students watch the video, I will put up different sets of words and then ask them how to join them together and make a contraction. Then I will ask the rest of the students to give me an example of two words that can be joined to make a contraction.

·          Once we have done that we will pull up a game, “Piñata Party:  Contraction Action,” on the Smart Board and play together as a class.  Each students will have one turn to go up to the board and play.


Reflection

1.      My lesson was more of a review, which I do not think I made quite clear at the beginning.  I do think I should have given my students more of an overview and checked for background knowledge before and after the rap.  After writing some examples up on the board, I could have given the students a worksheet over contractions, followed by the game.  That way by the time they were playing the game I knew for sure that the students had good understanding of what contractions are.

2.      Technology is a great tool for the classroom.  When we were listening to the contraction rap, I noticed that the students enjoyed singing along as well as dancing which was great.  It was great because I knew they were listening and learning while having fun.  I was also able to informally assess the students’ knowledge on contractions while they played Contraction Action.  The students were being timed therefore they knew they had to choose the correct answer quickly which they all did.

  1. I like how you found a song to go along with your contraction lesson. It makes it a catchy way for students to learn their contractions and helps them stick. I like how you reflected on how you should have stated about the lesson being more of a review. That's what helps us learn and further improve our teaching.

  2. I think your lesson was very good! I enjoyed playing the game, and I think that it is a good assessment for kids because it is a fun game and not a test. I also enjoyed the rap that you had. Very fun!

  4. I really enjoyed your lesson. The song you played to introduce the contractions was fun. I also love how you actually said the two words we had to combine in the song. That way instead of leaving the teaching up to the video, you were more involved in the teaching, as the teacher. It will also make the activity more fun for the kids. I also enjoyed the game we played at the end and how you handled the situation whenever we ran into any problems while playing the game. You did a really great job!

  5. I enjoyed you lesson. I especially liked the contraction song that you chose. Even as older students we were all engaged, so I can only imagine how much younger student will enjoy it! Your transition from the instructional process was very smooth and that we will be great when it comes to classroom management. Great Job!

Reflection 1 - Technology

Technology plays a major part of our lives, whether we want to admit it or not, it does.  We use it daily at work, school, and even at home.  Technology is at our fingertips.  For example, most of us, if not all of us always have our cell phone in our pocket, handbag, or hand. In the article, "Summon the Comfy Chairs," it talks about the Walt Disney Mary Poppins Movie and how the furniture moves at just the snap of Mary's fingers.  The article then later presents the idea of things like this eventually becoming a part of our reality.  Besides having moving furniture at the snap of one's fingers sounds, I cannot imagine them having a personality!  That's a little creepy.  What if you command you bed to make itself but it refuses to do so because of their personality? In "Teaching Robots Right From Wrong," they talk about how Japan, Europe, and the United States of America are building robots to be able to care for the elderly and disabled. ...
